La sierra de Collserola era, como hoy, el gran pulmón de Barcelona, el lugar ideal para aislarse en familia durante las frecuentes epidemias que asolaban la ciudad. Muchos comerciantes y burgueses se fueron estableciendo sus segundas residencias en sus laderas. Así nacieron las urbanizaciones como la de Vista Roca, en los alrededores de Can Cortés, en el término de Sant Cugat del Vallés. Uno de los propietarios de la zona era Josep Sabadell el personaje principal de nuestra historia: Sabadell fue presidente de la Confederación Patronal Catalana y uno de los últimos alcaldes que tuvo Gracia antes de su anexión a Barcelona (1893). Su vivienda principal era ésta, en la hoy Avenida Meridiana. Con la construcción de la carretera de la Rabassada (1877) y el “Parque de atracciones del Tibidabo” (1900) la zona era una “perita en dulce” para cualquier inversor con perspectivas de futuro. Josep Sabadell se asoció con el gran empresario de la restauración en ese momento Miquel Montané, propietario del Gran Café Restaurante Alhambra (1891) del paseo de Gracia número 25, el más amplio de la ciudad. Compraron la posada “Casa de Comidas La Rabassada” que antes se había conocido como Can Manela y después Restaurant El Rabassalet. Estaba junto a la fuente de aguas sulfurosas “la Rabassada”. Querían remodelarla y convertirla en un hotel de lujo con restaurante: el Gran Hotel Rabassada que se inauguró en 1899. Se había encargado del diseño al artista y arquitecto Edmond Lechevallier y a unos cien metros más allá, se abrió un exclusivo club privado donde la burguesía catalana y extranjera asentada en la ciudad, pudiese hablar de negocios en plena naturaleza: el “Círculo de extranjeros. Miquel Montané dejó la dirección del hotel a Joan Jubert para centrarse en un tema clave para el futuro complejo: unir con un tranvía Can Gomis, en la falda del Tibidabo con la urbanización de Vista Roca en Sant Cugat. Consiguirá la concesión en 1910 y explotará la línea con una empresa francesa “Boursier & Escartefigue” vinculada con ciertos miembros del Círculo de Extrangeros”. Josep Sabadell convenció a algunos inversores franceses miembros del Círculo de Extranjeros para adquirir el conjunto (1808) más 10 hectáreas de terreno. La idea era construir el que debía ser el mayor y más exclusivo complejo de ocio junto a la ciudad. Registraron la Societat Anònima La Rabassada SA y pusieron sobre la mesa dos millones y medio de pesetas y contactaron con el arquitecto Andreu Audet i Puig para encargarle las obras. La idea subyacente era situar dentro del club privado, el casino, a fin de capear la ley que impedía abrir salones de juego en los establecimientos públicos. Junto a él se iba a instalar un gran parque de atracciones que iba a dejar pequeño el del vecino parque del Tibidabo. El recinto se abrió el 15 de julio de 1911 con una inauguración apoteósica. A la recepción acudió la flor y nata de la burguesía barcelonesa y extranjera. El discurso inaugural lo presidió el entonces alcalde de Sant Cugat, Martí Rodó. Degustaron una magnífica cena de presentación preparada por cocineros expresamente llegados de París. Se empapeló Barcelona de publicidad. La prensa nacional e internacional daba cuenta del gran acontecimiento: El Diario de Barcelona, El Diluvio”, La Vanguardia, El Imparcial, El Heraldo de Madrid, Le Figaró, el Dayly Mail… Los promotores del proyecto habían instalado una línea de tranvías alquilados en Marsella que iba, en su origen, desde la hoy calle Craywinckel hasta las puertas del casino. El primer día se produjo ya una avería en el convertidor de la central eléctrica, aunque el servicio se reanudaría cuatro días más tarde (19/7/1911. Ante el contratiempo, la empresa puso a disposición de los visitantes una flota de coches con conductor ya que el funicular no daba al abasto… pero la mayoría de curiosos no pudieron llegar de ningún modo y tuvieron que conformarse con pasar el día un poco más abajo, en el Hostal de l´Arengada. El acceso al recinto costaba media peseta con derecho a subir a una atracción. Tenía salones de lujo, peluquería, servicio médico, salón de billares, teléfonos, oratorio, un teatro con capacidad para doscientas personas, restaurantes donde podías cenar por 5 pesetas… baños termales, salas de baile y un hotel con fantásticas habitaciones que costaban la friolera de ocho pesetas la noche. En el exterior esperaban a los visitantes unos espectaculares jardines con esculturas, pérgolas, glorietas y fuentes…y una terraza-mirador con quioscos de bebidas.
